W.Va. Corrections recruiting in Eastern Panhandle
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – As West Virginia continues to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, state corrections officials aim to bolster their ranks in the Eastern Panhandle.
The Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation is holding a one-stop career fair June 2 at the Eastern Regional Jail and Correctional Facility in Martinsburg, for officer positions there and at the nearby Vicki V. Douglas Juvenile Center.
The event is designed to allow recruits to sign up on the spot. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma, a valid driver's license and passage of a physical agility test and a drug screening.
Thanks to a series of recent pay raises, the starting salary for a correctional officer is $30,664. Officers who complete one year of employment are guaranteed a promotion and a 7 percent pay hike, bringing their annual salaries to $32,810. Pay increases further, to $35,106, after one year in that promoted position and the officer advances further up the ranks. The benefits package for starting officers is around $13,776. It includes comprehensive indemnity health insurance, term life insurance, and a defined benefit pension plan.
The one-stop is scheduled for 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Besides a valid driver's license, potential recruits are asked to wear comfortable shoes. The Eastern Regional Jail and Correctional Facility is located at 38 Grapevine Rd. in Martinsburg, and the event is at the facility's Unit 2 building at the corner of Grapevine Road and W.Va. Route 9.
